On the way from Llangollen on each long lockless pound
This boatman’s on auto, my brain has shut down
But memories are stirring of far distant days
Which through age are now viewed through a rose-tinted haze
The time the stove rattled and the chimney pipe shook
That night we made love above the locks at Grindley Brook
In my dreams
Refrain : In your dreams

On each tiresome straight stretch time itself slows
The tiller’s inactive and the brain’s comatose
But memories are stirring of far distant days
Which through age are now viewed through a rose-tinted haze
Of the time the boat rocked as if t’were at sea
That night we made love beside the bridge at Wrenbury

Now canal-sides in Wales appear covered in sheep
But constant exposure makes eyes heavy with sleep
So memories are stirring of far distant days
Which through age are now viewed through a rose-tinted haze
Of the time we made tidal waves crash on the shore
That night we made love outside the pub at Willey Moor

As the current flows onward, we drift across Whixall Moss
But for flora and fauna, well, I don’t give a toss
So memories are stirring of far distant days
Which through age are now viewed through a rose-tinted haze
The time I lay lifeless like a chicken freshly plucked
That night we made love on Pontyscyllate Aqueduct

The monotonous channel, the engines dull thud
But brain cells are stirring in their sea of thick mud
So to hell with those memories, there’s ambition left yet
I’m no washed-out old tom-cat that’s been seen by the vet
A thought leaps from nowhere, my heart is now racing
I think we’ll make love in the new Llangollen basin

On canal holdays with friends I have sometimes been called upon to sing a few songs at the end of the day. A few risque comedy songs have gone down well but songs with lengthy choruses have not. Whilst on a recent trip to Llangollen during a period of boredom I resolved to write a humorous canal song which had a short chorus. My wife insists that I make it clear that this is in no way based upon any real-life events.

After a request by Kevin Lewis I was very happy to provide him with a recording to accompany his time lapse video of boats passing through Grindley Brook. His web-site contains some amazing photos and is well worth a visit.
